The Marquis at The Woodlands, a Texas apartment complex, held a fundraiser  to raise money for Dogs on Deployment’s recent participation in the Veterans Charity Challenge (VCC). Thanks to help from donors like them, we  came in second place. They raised about $500 within two hours.
Our favorite part of the fundraiser? A patriotic dog costume contest.
The fundraiser not only included the dog costume contest, but also offered a donation raffle, sold t-shirts and offered food and drinks. For every $25 donated, the person would receive six raffle tickets. Raffle prizes included 1-hour massages from a local massage therapist, homemade gift baskets, gift cards, and more.
“We were really happy because we felt like we did something good,†said event coordinator, Kimberley Brooks.
The Marquis is located in Spring, TX, about 180 miles from Fort Hood. Brooks said there are many military families that live in the apartment complex.
“In the office, all us girls are pet lovers, and we do come from military families,†said Brooks. “I showed everyone the video, and was like ‘Hey, this would be something for us to do.â€
The winner of the costume contest was a Puggle, named Bailey, wearing a red, white, and blue tutu with matching bonnet. She won a dog bed full of dog accessories.
“It was really cute,†said Brooks, gushing about Bailey.
Each year, Brooks’ company donates money to each person’s, who has volunteered time, charity of choice. Brooks says she plans on giving hers to DoD this year.
